OK, Let’s Get a Reality Check on Compassion!
4 Steps to Finding Peace Through Compassion
Mornings can evoke negative emotions, leaving you feeling emotionally exhausted before the day starts. You’re not alone—compassion can help you navigate feelings of anxiety, frustration, and shame. News of suffering, such as violence or environmental crises, can create sadness and anger. Fortunately, compassion allows you to acknowledge suffering without feeling overwhelmed.
The Dalai Lama states, “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.”
Studies show compassion is linked to decreased anxiety and increased well-being, making people happier and healthier.
Increasing Compassion in Your Life
To cultivate compassion, consider these four steps:
- Step 1: Mindfulness
You can’t offer compassion without first noticing the suffering around you. Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose in the present moment, non-judgmentally (Jon Kabat-Zinn). Take a moment to observe your body and mind. Notice any tension and breathe deeply. Look around you and be aware of your surroundings.
- Step 2: Compassion for a Loved One
In Tibetan Buddhism, loving-kindness meditation begins with self-compassion. To evoke compassion, focus on someone you sincerely care for, such as a pet or friend.
- Step 3: Compassion for Yourself
Pay attention to your self-talk. Many people are overly critical and harsh on themselves. Self-compassion is linked to less procrastination, greater happiness, and optimism. Treat yourself as you would treat a good friend, recognising that you are not alone in your struggles.
- Step 4: Common Humanity
It’s easier to show compassion to those close to you. The challenge is to extend this compassion to others, including strangers or those you may not like. Recognise that all humans share fundamental experiences: the desire for happiness, Love, and understanding. This practice fosters a deeper connection with the world.
Practising these steps will help you face daily suffering, which is pervasive and unavoidable.

Mindfulness Meditation
Understand that it’s normal for your mind to wander during meditation. The goal is to recognise when it drifts and gently bring your focus back to your breath. Mindfulness involves both concentrated attention and the ability to see the broader picture. Balancing these two aspects enhances your awareness.
