Detailed Curriculum for Module 7: Self-Compassion Mastery
Never stop learning, for when we stop learning, we stop growing.
Before You Begin… Focus on the things that you can change. It’s time for a change.

In Module 7: Self-Compassion Mastery, we explore kindness and compassion—the core of almost every meditative tradition. We delve into our natural tendency to connect and care for others, considering the value and potential of being compassionate beyond our closest relationships.
The Curriculum consists of a compilation of 7 powerful elements:
1. Formal Practice
- Body Scan
- Sitting Meditation
- Yoga
- Lovingkindness
2. The Informal Practice
- Simple Awareness
- Mindful Eating
- STOP
3. & 4. Videos & Readings: Module 7 Self-Compassion Mastery
- A compilation of brilliant videos for your enjoyment.
- In the Supplementary section, discover interesting videos and resources to watch.
- The first video, The Evolutionary Roots of Compassion, by Dacher Keltner of U.C., Berkeley, provides evidence for our deep-seated inclination to care for others.
- The article Survival of the Kindest indicates that even Darwin believed in the natural capacity for compassion. Matthieu Ricard, a Buddhist monk with over 50,000 hours of meditation practice, makes a case for consciously supporting this capacity in the video Cultivating Altruism.
- We also explore the natural linkages between mindfulness and compassion in Shauna Shapiro’s video How Mindfulness Cultivates Compassion, along with her article Does Mindfulness Make You Compassionate?
- In Self-Compassion, Emma Seppala points out our tendency to be overly critical of ourselves. She describes ways to cultivate healthy self-compassion in the video Overcoming Objections to Self-Compassion.
- The article The Five Myths of Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff explores misconceptions about self-compassion, including the belief that motivation requires self-criticism and that being kinder to ourselves makes us complacent.
4. Reading: Module 7 Self-Compassion Mastery
- Specifically selected readings to expand your knowledge.
- In the Supplementary section, check out some interesting articles and books you can buy directly from the link.
5. (a) Daily Practices
- In keeping with this theme, we introduce the Lovingkindness Meditation, which we suggest concentrating on during Module 7.
- It is a shorter practice (13 minutes), but you can extend it for another 17 minutes to give yourself an entire 30-minute session on that day.
- Or… you can extend a bit of lovingkindness to yourself.
- You can stop at the end of the 13-minute meditation.
- For this week’s formal practice, you can choose between the three leading practices: Body Scan, Sitting Meditation, or Yoga, including at least one day of the Lovingkindness meditation.
- For the informal practice, on any given day, you may choose any of the following: Simple Awareness, Mindful Eating, STOP, or “Turning Toward.”
5. (b) Journaling
The Importance of Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and ideas during the MindfulLiving™ course is essential. Journaling can enhance your self-awareness, clarify your thoughts, and help you reflect on your experiences. It’s a powerful tool for tracking growth and understanding emotional responses. As you engage with the material, jot down insights, questions, and reflections in a journal. This practice can deepen your understanding and support your mindfulness journey.
6. Reflections
Consider the following questions to deepen your practice:
- How can you show yourself more compassion today?
- What insights have you gained about your self-criticism?
- How does practising self-compassion change your perspective on challenges?
7. Resources: Supplementary Materials for Module 7: Self-Compassion Mastery
This section includes a wealth of resources divided into:
- Videos – Excellent viewing
- Audios – Interesting interviews
- Reading – Various excellent articles
- Books – Recommended reading
