10 Fitness and Health Benefits of Meditation and Compassionate Communication
- Exercise more—and enjoy it. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sports Psychology found that athletes who practice mindful meditation techniques (sitting meditation, mindful yoga, and walking meditation) are more motivated to exercise regularly and are more satisfied with their workouts than those who are less mindful.
- Sleep better. You’ve had those nights when you slide into bed, exhausted, but your brain buzzes with thoughts of unfinished tasks. Before turning to pills, try meditation. Shery recommends practising mindfulness for 20 minutes during the day: “The idea is to create a reflex that brings forth relaxation more easily. This way, it’s easier to evoke the relaxation response at night when you can’t sleep.”
- Come up with more game-changing ideas. Meditation can boost creativity. Divergent thinking—where idea generation flows—is enhanced through mindful practices.
- Get sick less often. Mindfulness meditation and moderate exercise have been shown to enhance the immune response and protect against colds and flu.
- Reduce chronic pain. Meditation is a natural and effective alternative for reducing chronic pain and associated distress without relying on painkillers.
- Lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Mindfulness meditation has been extensively researched and has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. A 20-minute session twice daily, focusing on the present moment, can yield tremendous benefits.
- Relieve stress. Mindfulness has the crucial benefit of reducing stress. Even a few minutes a day can help.
- Fight depression. A combination of meditation and exercise, done twice a week for two months, can reduce depressive symptoms by up to 40%, even in individuals who do not suffer from clinical depression.
- Become more compassionate. Compassionate Communication and mindfulness practices foster kindness, empathy, and emotional awareness, helping you become more compassionate without forcing change.
- Feel less lonely. Loneliness is linked to several health risks, but mindfulness meditation can help reduce feelings of isolation and build stronger connections.

- Modifying practices: Many participants have physical limitations, so it is essential to modify practices to suit their bodies’ needs. Adjusting practices to work for you is MindfulLiving™ in action.
- Mindful of your limits: Be mindful of your limits. It is usual for ongoing memories to arise. Compassionate Communication is about understanding your experience and responding with care, not forcing through discomfort.
- Access to support: You have access to support throughout this course. If you experience overwhelming emotions, take a break and contact me—Shery Clein, MindfulLiving™ Coach—at shery@sheryclein.com for a free counselling session.
- Doctor’s/Counsellor’s care: If you’re already under a doctor’s or counsellor’s care, please inform them of your participation in this program and update them on your progress. Monitoring any emotional or physical responses to the course is essential for your well-being.
