Reclaim Your Comfort – Embrace Vitality
Turning Toward Discomfort
Embracing Discomfort with Compassion: In Module 5 of the MindfulLiving™ program, we delve into the practice of “Turning Toward” discomfort. This mindful approach invites you to consciously explore difficult emotions and physical pain rather than avoiding or resisting them. Although this may feel counterintuitive, it is a transformative method that fosters a compassionate and accepting relationship with your experiences.

You can have compassion for yourself – which is not self-pity.
You’re simply recognising that ‘this is tough, this hurts,’
and bringing the same warmhearted wish for suffering to lessen or end
that you would bring to any dear friend grappling with the same pain, upset, or challenges as you.
– Rick Hanson –
Understanding MindfulLiving™
-
- Mindfulness is about fully embracing the present moment. It involves perceiving the richness and vibrancy of each experience as it unfolds. —Jon Kabat-Zinn.
- Mindful moments often catch us by surprise — whether it is the tranquillity of nature, deep focus on an activity, or a meaningful connection with someone. These moments of presence are always accessible, yet they can slip away during times of stress or hardship.

-
- Shery Clein, MindfulLiving™ Coach, describes mindfulness as “paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity, allowing yourself to be with what is.” This understanding is central to the definition of mindfulness.
- MindfulLiving™ combines meditation, body awareness, and mindful movement to help you navigate stress and discomfort. Practising and applying these techniques can cultivate a more profound sense of peace and resilience in daily life.
What Pain-Free Living Through MindfulLiving™ Can Offer You
Skill Building
-
- Handle stress, discomfort, and challenges more effectively.
-
- Approach difficult situations with calmness and clarity.
- Engage fully with the present moment, particularly in times of difficulty.

Therapeutic Benefits
While not a substitute for medical care, mindfulness practices have been shown to alleviate stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and other conditions. Participants often report a greater sense of connection with themselves and others, leading to a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

Interactive Reflection
-
- Think about a recent situation where you avoided addressing discomfort. How did this avoidance impact your overall well-being? How might embracing this discomfort change your response in future situations?
- What are some situations in your life where you tend to avoid discomfort? How might “Turning Toward” these experiences change your relationship with them?
Jot down your thoughts and revisit them as you progress through the module.
